Offered by Government of Canada, Pacific Economic Development Canada
Strong regional innovation doesn’t happen by accident—it’s built through networks that help businesses turn ideas into commercial success. For not-for-profit organizations that support entrepreneurs and growing companies, the PacifiCan — Regional Economic Growth through Innovation: Regional Innovation Ecosystems stream offers an opportunity to strengthen those networks across British Columbia. Delivered by Pacific Economic Development Canada as part of a national initiative, this program focuses on creating inclusive, high-performing ecosystems that help businesses scale, improve productivity, and compete globally.
The Regional Innovation Ecosystems stream is designed for organizations that work behind the scenes of innovation, such as accelerators, incubators, industry associations, Indigenous-led organizations, and post-secondary institutions. Funding support can help expand services that guide businesses through later-stage product development, technology adoption, market expansion, and investment readiness. Projects often centre on priority sectors like clean technology, life sciences, agri-food, manufacturing, and information technology, where coordinated support can unlock regional strengths. A key emphasis is ensuring under-represented groups, including Indigenous entrepreneurs, women, and youth, are better connected to the innovation economy.
Funding amounts vary by project and are typically structured as conditionally repayable contributions, reflecting the long-term economic impact these initiatives aim to generate. Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis, making timing flexible for organizations planning meaningful ecosystem investments. For not-for-profits exploring ways to expand their impact and support business growth in B.C., learning more about this program’s scope and requirements is a worthwhile next step.
