Offered by Government of Canada, Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada
For Canadian AI companies, access to affordable, high-performance compute can be one of the biggest barriers to scaling innovative products and bringing them to market. The AI Compute Access Fund was created to address this challenge by helping small and medium-sized businesses offset the steep cost of cloud-based AI compute needed for advanced research, model training, and commercialization. Delivered by Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada, the program is part of the federal government’s broader effort to strengthen Canada’s domestic AI ecosystem and keep growing companies competitive at home and abroad.
This national program is aimed at incorporated Canadian businesses developing AI-driven products or services, particularly those with an in-house R&D team and a clear plan to commercialize their technology. Support is structured to cover a significant share of eligible compute expenses, with larger contributions available for companies using Canadian-based compute providers. Depending on the project’s risk profile and expected benefits to Canada, funding may be non-repayable or structured as conditionally repayable, with total support ranging from roughly one hundred thousand dollars to several million dollars over a multi-year period.
The most recent call for proposals has closed and attracted strong interest from AI firms across multiple industries, and applications are currently under review. For businesses planning future AI-intensive projects, understanding how this fund works and whether a future intake could align with your growth strategy is an important next step worth exploring in more detail.
