Low Carbon Communities

Offered by Government of Nova Scotia, Department of Energy and Mines

Nova Scotia Clean Technology & Environment

Program Overview

Communities across Nova Scotia that are trying to cut energy costs, reduce emissions, or test new clean energy ideas often need early-stage funding to move from concept to action. The Low Carbon Communities program was created to support that planning and pilot phase, helping organizations explore practical, community-led solutions in clean buildings, clean electricity, clean transportation, and energy education. Delivered by the Nova Scotia Department of Energy and Mines, the program focuses on projects that are innovative, cost-effective, and capable of delivering real local benefits.

Funding through Low Carbon Communities is non-repayable and can cover a significant share of project costs, making it easier to pursue feasibility studies, project designs, engagement initiatives, and other preparatory work. Most technical and infrastructure-focused projects can access funding support of up to about $75,000, while education-focused initiatives can receive up to roughly $50,000. Projects are encouraged to demonstrate multiple outcomes, such as economic development, job creation, improved resilience, and greater equity and accessibility within communities.

The program is open to a wide range of Nova Scotia organizations, including businesses, non-profits, municipalities, and community groups with projects that deliver clear public benefits. Intake periods open periodically, so understanding the requirements and project fit in advance can make a difference.
