Grid Innovation Fund

By GrantHub Research Team ·

As Ontario’s electricity system evolves to support electrification, clean growth, and grid resilience, utilities and energy innovators often face a gap between promising ideas and real-world deployment. The Grid Innovation Fund was created to help bridge that gap by supporting projects that test, demonstrate, and scale new approaches to how the grid is planned, operated, and modernized. Led by Ontario’s Independent Electricity System Operator, the program focuses on practical innovation that can deliver measurable benefits to the provincial power system.

The fund supports a wide range of initiatives across the energy and clean technology space, from advanced grid technologies and digital tools to new operational practices and collaborative pilot projects. Local hydro companies, technology providers, consulting firms, industry associations, educational institutions, and public sector organizations have all been involved in past projects. Funding is non-repayable and can reach up to roughly $2 million per project, helping offset the cost of development, testing, and implementation for initiatives that may be too risky or capital-intensive to pursue alone. Projects are typically selected through open calls or targeted calls that address specific system challenges or emerging opportunities.

While the Grid Innovation Fund is not currently accepting applications, it remains a significant opportunity for organizations planning future grid-focused projects in Ontario. Understanding how the program works and what types of innovation it prioritizes can help you prepare for upcoming intakes and determine whether your idea is a strong fit.
