For Alberta organizations working on clean hydrogen technologies, securing large-scale funding can be a major hurdle when moving from research to real-world deployment. The Advancing Hydrogen – Competition 1 initiative was created to help bridge that gap, supporting ambitious projects that advance hydrogen production, distribution, and end-use applications across the province. Led by Alberta Innovates through the Hydrogen Centre of Excellence, this competition focused on accelerating Alberta’s role in the emerging hydrogen economy while building on its existing energy expertise.
The program targeted projects aligned with Alberta’s Hydrogen Roadmap, including clean hydrogen for transportation, industrial processes, power generation, heating, and energy storage. Funding support was substantial, with awards reaching into the tens of millions of dollars for projects that demonstrated strong technical merit, collaboration with industry or end users, and clear economic or environmental benefits for Alberta. Successful applicants included a mix of SMEs, large enterprises, post-secondary institutions, and non-profits working together on applied research, pilot projects, and early commercialization efforts.
While Competition 1 has already concluded and funded projects are underway, it set the foundation for future hydrogen-focused funding rounds under the same initiative. Businesses and organizations active in clean technology, energy, or environmental innovation may want to follow upcoming competitions closely to see how similar opportunities could support their hydrogen-related plans.
