For early-stage tech companies, protecting intellectual property can be just as critical as building the product itself. AccelerateIP is designed for startups that are developing innovative technologies and want to better understand, protect, and leverage their IP as they grow. Delivered by New Ventures BC with support from Innovate BC, the program focuses on helping founders turn ideas and inventions into defensible business assets, particularly in competitive and fast-moving markets.
The program is structured in progressive streams that meet companies where they are. Startups can begin with education and awareness to build a strong foundation in IP fundamentals, then move into strategy support that includes one-on-one mentorship and funding support of up to about $25,000 to shape an IP roadmap. For businesses ready to take action, the implementation stream offers non-repayable funding of up to roughly $60,000 to help cover eligible legal costs related to putting IP protections in place, such as patents or other formal registrations. Support levels and availability can vary by stream, and not all streams are always open at the same time.
AccelerateIP is particularly relevant for BC-based startups, as well as those in Canada’s northern territories, that have fewer than 500 employees and control the rights to their IP in Canada. For founders who see intellectual property as a long-term driver of value, exploring the full details of AccelerateIP can clarify whether this program fits their growth strategy.
