Water Program — On-farm irrigation stream

Reliable and efficient irrigation is becoming increasingly important for Alberta producers facing water constraints, rising input costs, and climate variability. The Water Program — On-farm Irrigation Stream is designed to help farms modernize how water is applied in the field, making it easier to invest in systems that improve efficiency, protect water supplies, and support long-term productivity. Delivered through the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership in collaboration with the Government of Alberta, this stream focuses specifically on irrigation-related improvements at the farm level.

Through this program, eligible agricultural businesses can receive non-repayable funding to offset a portion of the costs associated with installing new on-farm irrigation systems or upgrading existing ones. Support can reach up to roughly $35,000 per applicant each year, helping cover expenses such as equipment purchases or system enhancements that reduce water waste and improve control. By sharing project costs, the program makes it more feasible for producers to adopt better water management practices without taking on the full financial burden themselves.
