Offered by Government of Ontario, Intellectual Property Ontario
For Ontario businesses trying to compete, scale, or commercialize innovation, intellectual property can quickly become both a critical asset and a costly blind spot. Intellectual Property Ontario (IPON) is designed to help startups, growing companies, and established organizations better understand, protect, and leverage their IP as part of a broader business strategy. Delivered by the Government of Ontario through IPON, this program focuses less on one-time grants and more on building long-term IP capability that supports growth in competitive and global markets.
IPON provides tailored support based on a company’s stage and IP readiness, combining practical education with hands-on expertise. Businesses can access foundational IP learning, benchmarking tools that assess their current IP health, and one-on-one coaching that connects IP decisions directly to commercialization goals. For companies ready to take action, IPON also offers non-repayable funding support of up to around $100,000 to offset the cost of forward-looking IP work, such as developing IP strategies, securing registrations, or putting proper agreements in place. This funding is paired with access to licensed Ontario IP professionals and optional IP insurance, helping reduce risk while strengthening protection.
With applications accepted on an ongoing basis until funding is allocated, IPON is a valuable resource for Ontario businesses that see IP as a growth driver but need guidance and support to use it effectively. Exploring the program further can help determine how IPON fits into your business’s innovation and commercialization plans.
