FedNor — Regional Defence Investment Initiative

Companies working in aerospace, defence, and advanced manufacturing often face steep costs when trying to meet military standards, scale production, or break into established defence supply chains. For small and medium-sized businesses in Northern Ontario, the FedNor Regional Defence Investment Initiative creates an opportunity to tackle those barriers while aligning with Canada’s growing defence and security priorities. Delivered by the Federal Economic Development Agency for Northern Ontario, this initiative supports projects that strengthen Canada’s defence industrial base and help regional firms compete domestically and internationally.

The program focuses on practical, defence-driven investments such as adopting new technologies, improving productivity, expanding capacity, and adapting dual‑use innovations for military applications. Funding support can cover a substantial portion of project costs, with contributions for businesses typically structured as partially repayable, while not-for-profit and Indigenous-led organizations may access largely non-repayable support. This makes the initiative relevant not only for defence suppliers themselves, but also for industry associations, innovation centres, and Indigenous organizations that help SMEs become supply-chain ready.
