Offered by Government of Canada, Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario
Francophone communities in southern Ontario often rely on strong local organizations to drive business growth, innovation, and economic resilience. For not-for-profit organizations delivering programs and services in French, the FedDev Ontario Economic Development Initiative (Southern Ontario) offers meaningful funding support to turn community-focused economic ideas into action. The program is part of Canada’s broader commitment to strengthening official language minority communities and is designed to help Francophone regions build on their unique strengths while addressing local economic challenges.
Through this initiative, eligible not-for-profit and community-based organizations can access non-repayable funding of up to around $500,000 per year to support projects that go beyond day-to-day operations. Supported activities often include economic development and diversification efforts, business and sector development initiatives, and strategic planning that improves long-term competitiveness. Projects may focus on areas such as innovation, workforce development, digital adoption, tourism, clean technology, or initiatives supporting women, youth, and newcomers, as long as they contribute to sustainable economic growth within Francophone communities.
Funding typically covers a significant portion of project costs, with organizations contributing the remaining share through cash or in-kind support. Applications are generally accepted on an ongoing basis, making this a flexible option for organizations planning new or expanded initiatives. For Francophone or bilingual not-for-profits in southern Ontario looking to strengthen their community’s economic future, learning more about how this program works could be a valuable next step.
