Offered by Government of Canada, Natural Resources Canada
Canada’s push to rapidly expand housing supply while improving energy performance is creating new opportunities for construction innovators. For companies exploring modern building methods, the Energy Innovation Program – Off-Site Construction Challenge offers a chance to turn forward-looking ideas into real-world residential projects. Delivered by Natural Resources Canada, this national challenge focuses on off-site construction approaches that can speed up delivery of multi-unit housing while improving energy efficiency and resilience.
The program is structured in stages to support both early design work and full-scale implementation. In the initial phase, selected applicants can access grant funding of up to roughly $180,000 to develop and refine innovative off-site construction concepts for residential buildings. These designs are expected to demonstrate how factory-built or modular approaches can reduce emissions, control costs, and improve build quality. Finalists from this phase may then be invited to compete for a much larger contribution, with support reaching up to about $10 million to help bring a winning design into construction.
The challenge is open nationwide and is relevant to construction firms, developers, engineering teams, and other organizations working in the residential building space, including those collaborating with public or Indigenous partners. With applications currently being accepted, this initiative is especially timely for organizations ready to play a role in shaping the future of housing delivery in Canada. Reviewing the full program details can help determine how this opportunity aligns with your technical capabilities and growth plans.
